When an hour goes by, which hand moves further?
The long hand goes all the way round. The short hand only moves on to the next mark.
- Hour hand
- The short hand. It shows the hour.
- Minute hand
- The long hand. It shows the minutes past the hour.
- 24 hour time
- The hours of a day counted from 0 at midnight up to 23, so every time has its own number.
- Short hand: which two numbers is it between?The hour is the number it has passed.
- Long hand: count in fives.Start at the 12: 5, 10, 15 ... that many minutes past the hour.
- Write the hour, a colon, then the minutes.4:40
