Short multiplication
The Maths Habit
How many dots are there? Multiply.
4 × 6 = 242This array shows 3 × 8. Write the fact turned round.
8 × 3 = 243Work out 7 × 8. Split the rows into facts you know.
40 + 16 = 56
There are too many dots to count one by one. How could you count them quickly?
Make tens. Each row is 2 tens and 3 ones: count the tens, then the ones.
- Place value
- What a digit is worth because of its column.
- Partition
- Split a number into hundreds, tens and ones.
- Product
- The answer when you multiply.
- Carry
- Move a full ten into the next column.
- Split it by place value.
- Multiply each part.
- Add the parts.
