Recognising linear and quadratic graphs

The Maths Habit

You throw a ball to a friend. Sketch the path it takes through the air. Is it a straight line?

No: a curve, up and then back down

Linear
A straight line graph. Its equation has x but no x2.
Quadratic
A curved graph. Its equation has x2.

y = x + 1

y = x2 − 1

Linear or quadratic?

y = 3x − 5 Linear

Linear or quadratic?

y = x2 + 1 Quadratic

Where does it cross the y-axis?

y = x2 − 6 (0, −6)

Which equation matches the graph?

y = x + 3y = −x + 3y = −x2 + 3

Which equation matches the graph?

y = x2 + 2y = −x2 + 2y = −2x + 2
