Faces, edges and vertices
The Maths Habit
Which one is the odd one out? Why?
C comes to a point. D has triangles. A has all its faces the same. More than one answer is right.
How many sides does each pink shape have?
- Face
- A flat surface of a 3D shape.
- Edge
- A line where two faces meet.
- Vertex
- A corner, where edges meet. Two or more are called vertices.
A prism has the same face at both ends. The pink end gives its name.
- 1Faces: 2 ends + the sidesThe pink end has 4 sides, so 4 faces go round the side.
- 2Edges: top + bottom + going up4 round the top, 4 round the bottom, 4 going up.
- 3Vertices: top + bottom4 on the top, 4 on the bottom.

Prism or pyramid?
A pyramid has a base and comes to a point. The pink base gives its name.
- 1Faces: 1 base + the sidesThe pink base has 4 sides, so 4 faces go round the side.
- 2Edges: base + going up4 round the base, 4 going up to the point.
- 3Vertices: base + the point4 on the base, 1 at the point.

Answer sheet
A prism has an end with 8 sides. How many edges does it have?
24For a cube, work out faces + vertices − edges. Try it for a pyramid. What do you notice?
2 both timesCan a pyramid have 10 edges? Explain.
Yes, a pentagonal based pyramid: 5 + 5
