Equations: the unknown on both sides

The Maths Habit

  1. Solve 5(x + 2) = 35

    x = 5
  2. Solve 4(x − 3) = 18

    x = 7.5
  3. Solve 2(3x + 4) = 2

    x = −1

Left: 5 bags and 2 marbles.
Right: 3 bags and 12 marbles.
Bags hold the same. It balances.
What could you take off both sides?

3 bags, or 2 marbles: 5 in a bag

Simplify

  1. 5x − 2x

    3x
  2. 7x − x

    6x
  3. 4x − 9x

    −5x
  4. 3x − 3x

    0
