The Maths Habit
A slides to B. Ali counts the gap. He says A moved 2 squares right. Is Ali right?
No. Follow one corner: A moved 5 squares right.
The dot slides from P to Q. How many squares right? How many squares up?
- Translation
- A slide. The shape does not turn or flip.
- Column vector
- Two numbers, one above the other, in brackets. They say how far the shape slides.
- Corner
- A point where two sides of a shape meet.
A slides to B. Which corner of B matches the dot on A?
- Pick a corner.Mark a dot on a corner of A. Mark the same corner of B.
- Count the squares.Across first: right or left. Then up or down. Count squares, not lines.

Which way does each vector slide the shape?
A−313 left, 1 up
B2−42 right, 4 down
C−5−25 left, 2 down
D6−16 right, 1 down
- Write the vector. The top number: right or left. The bottom number: up or down.
- Left or down: a minus.Right or up: no sign.

Is the vector from A to B right? Thumbs up or thumbs down.
B2−2Wrong: 4 right, not 2 C42Wrong: left, so −4 on top D32Wrong: across goes on top
A corner of a shape moves from (2, 5) to (7, 1). Write the column vector.
5−4
The vector 3−2 maps A onto B. Write the vector that maps B onto A.
−32
A shape is translated by 21 and then by 34. Write one vector that does the same job.
